Common questions

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial root of a tooth, on which a crown, bridge or a set of dentures is fixed.

Is the implantation painful?

No. The patient always gets a local anaesthesia. In case of larger operations (e.g. 3-4 implants) the doctor may also offer a light anaesthesia (dozing). You won’t feel any pains during the operation. In most cases, patients even don’t remember the implantation afterwards.

Are there rejection reactions to dental implants?

No. Modern dental implants are fabricated of titanium and ceramics. Titanium and ceramics are biocompatible materials, which have been used successfully in implantodontics for many years. There are no documented rejection reactions to titanium or ceramics.

What are the costs for an implantation?

The costs depend on several factors, for example on the number of necessary implants, if the bone has to be regenerated first in order to be able to carry out the implantation, which final dental provision is desired, etc.. Your dentist (implantodont) will elaborate an estimate of the costs after examining the individual situation thoroughly.

May an implant trigger allergies?

The implants used today consist of biocompatible titanium or of the bio-inert ceramic material zirconia. There are no proved allergies to titanium, as well as to zirconia. For especially sensitive patients, who do not wish any metallic material, a ceramic implant is the alternative.

How are the prospects of success for implants?

The correct procedure and hygiene presumed, dental implants can be in excellent order your whole life. Academic studies document that the prospects of success are very high.

After the Implant surgery

Do I have to do without teeth after the implantation?

No. In most cases an interim set of dentures is fabricated for the healing period. This interim provision may be a small adhesive bridge or part of a denture. In case a single tooth is to be replaced by an implant, an adhesive bridge is fixed at the neighbouring teeth.

How long is the healing period for the implant?

Due to differing bone qualities, an implant in the upper jaw needs about six months to establish itself firmly in the bone, in the lower jaw about three months. In many cases, however, the development of special surfaces and designs has made it possible to equip modern dental implants with a crown or a bridge and to bear loads even earlier.

Do dental implants need the same hygiene as teeth?

Implants also need regular hygiene and care. At least once a year you should consult your dentist for control and for professional cleaning.
