Within the framework of the medical engineering high tech offensive a new, pioneering dental implant was developed by the ziterion GmbH in a research project supported by the Bavarian ministry of trade and industry and the LGA Nuremberg (subsidiary of the TUEV Rheinland providing testing and other services).
During the project period of two years ziterion succeeded in becoming the first company to successfully develop a two-piece dental implant of zirconia ceramics ready for the market, considering above all the special ceramic properties of the material and providing a real alternative to titanium implants.
In a final event taking place at the office of the ziterion GmbH on 3rd March 2009 the Managing Director of ziterion Steffen Kahdemann together with the research institutes and partners involved were presenting the result of the project to the representative of the LGA innovation advice centre of Northern Bavaria, Dr. Christoph Pinkwart. According to Dr. Pinkwart, the quick development of the ziterion innovation resulting in a product ready for the market was made possible by the assistance within the framework of the medical engineering high tech offensive.
The total subsidy for the project amounted to 271,000 Euros, with an estimated total amount of project costs of approximately 625,000 Euros. Eight new jobs could be created during the project period.

The zit-vario-z is a new pioneering implant product made of the high-performance ceramic material zirconia. At the IDS in Cologne end of March 2009 it will be presented by the ziterion GmbH within the scope of a research project supported by the Bavarian ministry of trade and industry and the LGA Nuremberg (subsidiary of the TUEV Rheinland providing testing and other services).
Since the middle of 2006, the ziterion GmbH together with clinicians and material scientists have been concentrating on the development of a subgingival ceramic implant providing the first real alternative to subgingival titanium implants. Several challenges had to be met, as for example perfect ceramic design, fracture-proof geometry, the joining technique between the implant and the modular component, as well as sterilization and up-to-date packaging.
Already in the summer of last year, ziterion succeeded in proving an extremely high resistance to fracture of the new zit vario-z implant in the first results of the mechanical tests which exceed the figures for comparable titanium implants nearly by a factor of 3. When applying the implants properly and according to the recommended procedure, fracture can absolutely be excluded.
The market introduction of the zit-vario-z implant is scheduled by ziterion for the end of 2009 after the completion of a clinical pilot study.

ziterion is going to be the first manufacturer offering compact, one-piece ceramic abutments of zirconia, which are not connected to the implant by means of a central metal screw. Thus, fractures of ceramic abutments are almost impossible.
